The final decision on the future of Bear Valley Golf Course — a Coast Guard-owned facility — could come as soon as next week.

“We are finalizing a decision, that is all I can say,” Kodiak Coast Guard base’s Morale, Well-Being and Recreation director Joe Bower told the Daily Mirror on Tuesday.

In Tuesday’s Daily Mirror, MWR posted a help wanted ad for a Bear Valley Golf Course greens manager for the 2015 golf season. Bower said MWR wants to be prepared in case the course remains open after this season. Current course manager Lisa Reuter is leaving her position after this season.

“In preparation, we are announcing to see what applicants we may get, and if the command follows through with opening next year, we would be prepared to bring that person on as soon as possible,” Bower said.

Kodiak’s only nine-hole golf course is under review by the Coast Guard because it has had financial losses in three consecutive years and the customer log shows that 60 percent of the people that use the course are not Coast Guard personnel or dependents, according to an interview with a Coast Guard spokeswoman in July.

Bower said a decision to either close or leave the course open could come in the next two weeks. He said Kodiak’s base command is expecting to meet with people in the MWR headquarters in Virginia next week to discuss the course.

“We need to have some final discussions to finalize things to see if it will work,” Bower said.

Bear Valley Golf Course opened in 1986.
