A modest entryway disguises the two levels of gently used items housed at Dogwood Books and Antiques.

While the store specializes in children’s books, Civil War history and works by local authors, its top floor is dedicated to approximately 20,000 used titles.

Owner Kenneth Studdard said he rents the space in the back of his bottom floor to antiques vendors.

“I think it’s good for a community to have a good used book store,” Studdard said. “So people will still be literate.”

The front shelves highlight the store’s dedication to Southern literary classics such as Gone With the Wind. It also has a number of signed copies of books written by local authors. “We’re more the used and rare type,” Studdard said.

Studdard has had the 205 Broad St., location for four years, but said he has run a similar business online for 15.

“I love books,” Studdard said. “I do something I enjoy. It’s a passion with me.”

The business is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It can be reached online at www.dogwoodbooks.net.
