The cost of compost
The city of Kodiak is composting its sewage sludge. That’s about the only certain thing about the city’s project to find a new way to dispose of the leftovers from the city’s waste treatment plant. As uncertainty lingers, the cost to the city could reach as much as $4 million. “Uncertainty is the operative word these days,” said Peter Olsen, the contractor running a temporary composting operation at the Kodiak Isl...

Guest Opinion: Preparing for an Arctic Future
Alaskans lead the nation in many things — resilience, toughness and creativity — and we are leaps and bounds ahead of rest of the United States when it comes to knowing a cold truth: we are an Arctic nation, and we need to start mapping out an Arctic-oriented agenda, especially from a maritime perspective. This agenda will require the leadership of our nation’s maritime guardians, the United States Coast Guard. I ...

Alaska Science Forum: Bison Bob a big discovery on the North Slope
As she scraped cold dirt from the remains of an extinct bison, Pam Groves wrinkled her nose at a rotten-egg smell wafting from gristle that still clung to the animal’s bones. She lifted her head to scan the horizon, wary of bears that might be attracted to the flesh of a creature that gasped its last breath 40,000 years ago. In the type of discovery they have dreamed about for years, Groves and Dan Mann, both rese...
