SENIOR LIFE: Valentine’s shindig set for Feb. 12
Kodiak Senior Center will host its annual Valentine’s Day Party at noon Friday, Feb. 12, at the center. The event honors all Kodiak seniors 80 and older. This year we have 197 people 80 and older on Kodiak Island and that number, I am happy to say, grows each year. The senior band, Whippersnappers, will entertain everyone at the party and we will have lots of door prizes and crown a queen and king. Plan on getting...

Engineering requirements could be off the table for now
Structures in Kodiak are required to be engineered, but an ordinance to change borough code that may be postponed could change that in the future. The ordinance FY2016-12 if passed would no longer require engineering for most one- and two-family homes. In the language of the ordinance, reasoning given for the change includes “the additional expense of engineering for certain new construction, additions, or remodel...

Trawlers cease fishing to talk to council
Most trawlers in the Gulf of Alaska stopped fishing this week to attend the North Pacific Fishery Management Council meeting, which runs until Tuesday. According to a release from several trawl associations, the trawlers are heading to the NPFMC meeting to express concern about potential gulf trawl bycatch management alternatives. “This is really quite unique,” said Julie Bonney, executive director of the Alaska T...

NLC Power Rankings: Setting the record straight
A week ago, I reported an incorrect answer to a trivia question in the Daily Mirror. Turns out Rob Foster scored a Kodiak High School boys basketball record 61 points in a 116-43 win over Homer in Nov. 1971. I reported he scored 63. I should have double-checked the information that I received. An article written by Joe Floyd that appeared on the front page of the Nov. 22, 1971, Daily Mirror sets the record straigh...

Kodiak Coast Guard transports injured man
A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak helicopter crew, operating from Cold Bay, lifted a hurt man from a fishing vessel on Sunday. A fisherman aboard the Barbara J near Unimak Pass fell down a stairwell, causing injuries serious enough to warrant a request for a medevac. The Jayhawk MH-60 crew took the man to Cold Bay to meet an emergency flight that took the man to Anchorage for treatment. Twenty-nine mph winds and si...

Legislature must cut big items in hard times
To the editor: Bright and early Saturday, the (mostly senior) citizens of Kodiak met with Alaska state budget director Pat Bitney and others to be briefed on the governor’s budget plan and the urgency of “doing something” this year. The event was organized by Afognak Native Corp. and others, who deserve a tip of the hat for their efforts. When I sit back and scrutinize what was presented, the view from my foxhole ...
