Help teens in foster care develop skills
To the Editor: The number of children in foster care is on the rise. Many teens in foster care are cycling out of foster care and ending up on the streets with no home, food or job to support them. I believe we need to teach teens job skills they need to succeed. Many foster care teens don’t get along with their foster parents. The teens that do get along with their foster parents learn skills that can help them ...

Increase taxes on junk food
To the Editor: With middle-class families depending on affordable, highly processed junk food instead of pricey, healthier foods for nutrition, increasing the taxes on junk food may have them consider healthier choices. Foods lacking in nutrients stunt the proper function of children’s intellectual and physical development and overall health. Without the proper nutrients for a child, the child won’t be able to ex...

New salon opens in Kodiak
The biggest penny in the city is hanging on the wall of Kodiak’s newest salon. Silvia Gridley, owner of Penny Lane Salon, said the inspiration for her salon’s name came from the giant penny wall decal she purchased for the building. “When I was looking for inspiration to decorate, I found a penny online,” she said. “I saw it and thought ‘oh my gosh, that’s it.’ When people come in they can see my big penny.” Renov...

Fires flare in dry conditions
Kodiak’s fire departments had a busy weekend as they responded to a boat fire, a car fire and a grass fire in dry and windy conditions. The Kodiak Fire Department responded to smoke coming from a boat docked at the Petro Marine fuel dock at 10:53 p.m. Friday. When firefighters arrived, they determined the smoke was from a fire in the engine room of the 86-foot fishing vessel Bering Beauty. It took eight firefighte...

KHS expansion begins this week
Before the show, the stage must be set. On Monday, workers cut poles and prepared to string fencing around Kodiak High School. This week, construction trailers will arrive and be filled with plans, equipment and staff, all in preparation for the groundbreaking of the Kodiak High School expansion and renovation project. “It’s about to happen. It’s really here,” said schools superintendent Stuart McDonald. A groundb...

Prep softball: Kodiak splits with Soldotna
Friday’s season-opening 11-2 loss to Soldotna was not the way the Kodiak softball team wanted to start the season.  Stars pitcher Serena Prior handcuffed the Bears offensively, while walks and errors did them in defensively.  It was a total turnaround Saturday.  The Bears bounced back for an 11-1 Northern Lights Conference victory to salvage a two-game series with the Stars at East Addition Park.  “We got mad,” Ko...

School district plans to stretch blanket of teachers between KHS and KMS
Kodiak will hit 16 hours of daylight next week as the sun peeks above the horizon at 6 a.m. Late risers will stretch the covers over their eyes, pulling their blankets up and letting their feet poke out. As spring turns to summer, the Kodiak Island Borough school district is doing some stretching of its own, and like those early risers, it’s finding its blanket a bit too small. On Friday, Kodiak High School reveal...

How are schools failing us?
To the Editor: Often it seems that yes, our schools are failing us, but how exactly? Are students not learning? Are teachers not teaching? Society blames the students, parents blame the teachers, and teachers blame the parents. Instead of taking responsibility, we have created a blame game that is getting us nowhere. I look at this situation and feel teachers are feeling a bit disenchanted with their jobs. Perha...

We should all help pass the Dream Act
To the Editor: Undocumented aliens are a huge part of America. The nation’s total immigrant population in 2011 reached 40.4 million, and the numbers keep increasing every day. Many immigrants have been here since childhood. Many of them didn’t choose to be here; their parents made the choice for them. Many of them are bright, intelligent students. All they want is to be able to live a normal life in a place they...
