Tapestry: Gardner driven by a passion like Patrick's
Lively dancing, Irish toasts and pitchers of green beer will no doubt highlight many St. Patrick’s Day parties this Sunday. What often gets bypassed in these celebrations is the missionary zeal that drove the English-born lad saint dangerous territory. Kidnapped at age 16 and brought to Ireland as a slave, Patrick escaped his captors and returned to England. He came back to Ireland to preach the Gospel after heari...

Another Day in Paradise: Overcoming isolation
As you read this, I will either be boarding, waiting, or riding on our ferry system heading home. This morning, I will board the ferry in Homer for a 13-hour ride home with our new van. Tomorrow, I will get off the ferry in Kodiak, take the van home, repack some fresh clothes and then board the ferry with our old van, bound back to Homer. Twenty-six hours on a ferry in a 34-hour timeframe was not on my calendar of...

Tax team offers free tax services in town
Kodiak residents who haven’t filed their taxes can take advantage of free help today. The Alaska Business Development Center sent a team of volunteers from its Volunteer Tax and Loan program to Kodiak to prepare taxes for individuals and offer tax education. The program has offered its services to rural villages on Kodiak Island since 1996, but this is the first time a team has stopped in the city of Kodiak. “We g...

Winter thoughts
Falling snow is beautiful; snow-laden branches, snow-covered trees. Falling snow is quiet and peaceful. A big smile is put on my face and I am a kid again. Flashbacks of learning to ski on the slopes of Cranmore; of skating on the neighborhood pond. Winter is not winter without snow; they go hand in hand. Play in it; make snow angels and snowmen; snowshoe, go sledding or skiing. Make sugar on snow, the Vermont tra...

If the cookie in this lunchbox seems out of proportion—it’s because it is! Giant cookies are only one of the delights of a meal at Java Flats.

Island Flavor: Java Flats caters to health nuts
April is the cruelest month, T. S. Eliot said in his compelling and influential work, “The Waste Land.” Those owing federal income tax may agree. But inhabitants of Kodiak Island know the designation “cruel” belongs not to April but to the long winter month when Alicia McEwan closes Java Flats for her annual sabbatical. The island, of course, accepts her need for renewal, but oh, the heavy fog, the sinister silen...

Our Assembly is broken
To the Editor: After listening to last Thursday’s borough assembly meeting, I have concluded that our highest governing body is broken! Crimes against democracy have been apparent for a while, but now it’s out of hand! When four assembly members deny a fellow member the opportunity to defend himself, bells and whistles should go off in every constituent’s head and attempts to fix what’s broken should be addresse...
