Be careful who you vote for
To the Editor: It now appears we have a hardline Communist and KGB officer running the Syrian chemical weapons show: Vladimir Putin. He is also very much military. The leader of the United States has never been in the military. He doesn’t know anything about it, and it shows when making decisions and the right decisions. The Russians even bailed him out when he, Obama, stuck his foot in his mouth concerning the “r...

More to learn from Zimmerman trial
To the Editor: On June 25, 2013, during George Zimmerman’s trial, state prosecutor John Guy officially identified the personal possessions found, by the police, on Trayvon Martin’s body. These include “an unopened bag of Skittles” and a “full can of watermelon-flavored drink.” Photographs of the evidence show a clear plastic bag containing a red can. The label on the can identifies it as being “Arizona, Vitamin C ...

Vote 'yes' on Proposition 1
To the Editor: As elected government officials, our borough assembly members and our borough mayor should be held to higher standards. On Oct. 1, we the public will be voting on “Prop. 1,” which is crafted to help eliminate conflicts of interest with the assembly members and mayor. By voting yes on Prop. 1, we can preclude the mayor or any assembly member from being employed by the borough, or having a personal se...

Letter was on target
To the Editor: In this past Thursday’s KDM was a letter to the editor castigating both KDM (for printing) and the author of a prior letter to the editor who essentially gave a particular court officer a piece of her mind regarding a decision of his. I found the original letter addressed a relevant social issue and the fact that KDM did not censor this letter to be responsible and consistent with First Amendment gu...

Be a solution, not a problem
To the Editor: As a four-year member of Kodiak Teen Court, I have seen firsthand the admirable contributions that Judge Cole has made to this community. He has volunteered his valuable time to aid us in disciplining youth, using a model of restorative justice that help minors learn to give back to the City of Kodiak. Last year he swore in several new Teen Court judges, including myself, inspiring us all to strive ...

Private matters don't belong in a public forum
To the Editor: I would like to respond to the author of last week’s letter to the editor consisting of an assault on my family. A public letter is not the forum to discuss matters in such a way. To begin with, your facts about my brother are incorrect. I would like to clarify that he is not “bad” or “in and out of jail all of his life so far” but instead is a well-respected asset at his job, an incredible, compass...

Learn about the Affordable Care Act
To the Editor: Open enrollment for health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) begins in about three weeks. While the ACA provides protections and health care coverage for all Alaskans, Alaskan women particularly benefit from its requirement that insurance plans (finally!) cover the full range of FDA-approved contraception methods and stop insurance discrimination, “gender rating,” against women (www....

Private matters should stay that way
To the Editor: I just finished reading Ms. Arndt’s most recent letter to the editor, and I am appalled that our local newspaper would publish a letter that is so slanderous to a local individual. I do not know the facts concerning the custody issue referred to by Ms. Arndt, nor do I care to. I was brought up to believe that private issues are just that. But for Ms. Arndt to feel justified in making remarks about J...

Seedlings for Lesnoi land
To the Editor: Peter Olsen has a contract with Leisnoi to reseed the lands of Leisnoi which have been logged by A-1 Timber. Peter is experimenting if he can grow his own seedlings with the compost which he makes for the city. It is quite obvious that Peter is growing spruce seedlings to sell and plant on Leisnoi lands. Peter has a method to his madness. Frank Pagano

September is 'Vulnerable Adult Awareness Month'
To the Editor: There are good reasons for Governor Parnell to proclaim September 2013 “Vulnerable Adult Awareness Month.” Alaska has the fastest-growing senior population in the nation. Reports of harm to Adult Protective Services have risen 183 percent in the last five years. The office of the long-term care ombudsman now opens four times as many cases each month as it did in 2009. Our state has many vulnerable s...
