Alumni Spotlight: Caballa enjoys life at MSU-N
For those following the wrestling career of Andrew Caballa, you might have noticed the former Kodiak High School star is now going by Mhar Caballa. Caballa went back to his birth name so he would not get confused with his first Montana State University Northern roommate, who was also named Andrew. “Since I was little my parents always called me Andrew, but my closest friends called me Mhar,” said Caballa, who is i...

Outdoor Kodiak: Accentuate positive for effective change
I’m not one for big life-changing resolutions with the turn of a calendar page to another year. Or at least, I’m not very good at keeping punitive resolutions to change some glaring problem with my life. My embrace of a new year is more optimistic than that. I certainly take a glimpse at the year behind me, but my New Year’s is more about looking ahead for new opportunities to have fun and enjoy life, especially i...

40-year Baranov archivist retires
The Baranov Museum’s longtime archivist is retiring after 40 years as a volunteer and staff member. Alice Ryser came to Kodiak in 1963 on vacation to attend Crab Festival. While here, a fire burned the hotel in Cordova she had been living in with her three children, so they moved to Kodiak, where Ryser’s mother lived. She began working as a volunteer at the museum around 1975. Back then, the keys were kept at the ...

Today’s children don’t understand values, self-worth
To the editor: Roughly 50 years ago when I graduated from high school we had no teachers aids unless they were final year teaching students doing their student teacher requirements. I had 30 to 40 students in each high school class. We seldom had people in the principal’s office and the principals or administration staff never substituted for teachers. As a country we had the highest number of graduates from high ...
