Kodiak High School athletes compete for space in the hallways as they run on Thursday afternoon, March 7, 2013. With snow removal on Kodiak's new multimillion-dollar track caught in a political conflict, athletes are training in a way that would raise the ire of an elementary school teacher — by running in the halls.

Track team runs into conflict about snow removal
High school track and field season officially started this week, and while the Baranof Park track was clear at the start of the week, it is now blanketed in snow. This year, that’s a problem. In the past, clearing snow and ice from the track hasn’t been an issue. Students, community members and coaches converged on the track after each snow, shoveling slush and chipping ice with shovels. At first, Kodiak’s expensi...

Schools could face sticker shock
A proposal to make older cars’ registration permanent could cost Kodiak Schools more than $100,000 thanks to an obscure provision in borough code. If accepted by the Alaska Legislature, House Bill 19 would allow owners of cars eight or more years old to buy a permanent registration sticker. In Kodiak, the local share of car registration taxes goes to schools. If permanent registration becomes available, estimates ...

Support mental health care funding
To the Editor: The State House of Representative Finance Committee took comments from many different communities on Wednesday of this week. As I sat in the LIO I listened to heart wrenching testimony about Health and Human Services and Education. The need for mental health care in our state is vast. The funds they currently receive are insufficient to meet the needs of these fragile lives. The testimony, concerni...
