11 Bear football players suspended from team
Eleven players have been suspended from Kodiak’s varsity football team for its regular-season football finale Saturday at Skyview.  The suspensions were due to violations of the school’s athletic code of conduct, Kodiak coach Jim Schnick confirmed Wednesday.  The nature of the violations was not released. “A few players may be eligible for postseason play, but none will be eligible to play this weekend,” Kodiak H...

Amazing Nature: Where did the ocean come from?
When you drive to work, climb a mountain, catch a fish or take a boat ride, the ocean is always there, a seemingly endless, vast, and powerful presence. Yet most textbooks about the ocean first ask the intriguing question: Where did it come from? As I write this, I am consulting a book entitled “Introductory Oceanography” by Harold Thurman and Elizabeth Burton. The numbers used in the following text are scrounged...

Kaasnaq : Government
Kaasnaq : Government / Government Person
Kasnam sua taikutartuq. : A government person is coming. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Kodiak’s rural villages maintained local governments led by a community chief. The chief was chosen from the adult male residents of each village by a traditional council that included a second chief, a church warden, a lay reader, and community Elders. Although the position ...

Another Day in Paradise: Peace in the storms
I think that if John Milton would start over and write his poem today about Kodiak, Paradise Lost would not be about the fall of man, but of the great wind. I was walking our dogs one morning this week as the wind pounded and the rain pelted everything in sight. As we walked along, I was enchanted by everything that in the early morning grey dawn, was being blown along the beach. I watched the long leaves of kelp...

Island Flavor: El Chicano’s: News for a son stationed at Fort Benning
Dear Son, So, Dad shared the news that I am now Kodiak’s food critic; I heard you got a chuckle out of it. My new mission must seem droll compared to the excitement you’ve had, with your handling of Composition C-4 and the Humvee Rollover Training and all. But truly it is the most fun I’ve had since your Great Aunt Bess lost her teeth at the county fair. And I’ve gained a certain amount of (dare I say?) popularity...

Perspective: Encounters with Central American feral chickens
Travel is often touted as a way to broaden one’s education. After living in El Salvador for 18 months, I wholeheartedly agree that living abroad is a learning experience. However, sometimes the things learned while traveling are quite different than the lessons in culture, language, and politics that one expects. For example, my understanding of a certain barnyard animal has increased drastically in my time in Ce...

Skate park in need of improvements
Within the next few weeks, the Kodiak City Council will begin to examine spending plans for $1.9 million remaining from the first phase of the Baranof Park Improvements Project. We strongly urge the city to consider spending some of that money to address the failing Baranof Park skate park. When the skate park was approved by the city in 1999, it was supposed to be a place where skaters, bikers and scooter riders ...
