Students get free physicals
More than 60 students received free physicals on Saturday as part of an effort to help reduce the cost of high school sports. Students filled out paperwork and waited their turn for their physical at Kodiak High School. Last summer, Sarah Nugent, the dance team coach at Kodiak Island Borough School District, held the first free physical day in years. “When I was a student, people volunteered their time to give fre...

Post 17 splits league games with Bartlett
Joe Schactler couldn’t have picked a better time to send his first career home run into orbit. The right-hander launched a three-run shot over the right-field fence that jump-started Kodiak Post 17 to a come-from-behind 14-5 thumping of Bartlett in an American Legion AA league baseball game on Saturday at Baranof Field. Kodiak dropped the second half of the twinbill, 5-4, and if it wasn’t for Schactler, Post 17 wa...

New fiscal year offers fresh start for addressing Alaska’s economic future
On June 29, I signed into law the budget bills passed by the legislature. For fiscal year 2016, we will spend $1 billion less than we spent last year. This is a 19 percent overall reduction with an average 13.5 percent cut to executive branch agencies, and cuts of over 30 percent in the Department of Commerce and the Governor’s Office. Even with these reductions, we still have to draw $2.7 billion from savings to ...

Outdoor Kodiak: Time to get serious about pink salmon
Masses of pink salmon may not crowd river mouths just yet. But their numbers along beaches have grown so much it’s time to get serious about fishing. In fact it’s a good thing the river mouths won’t clog with them for another few weeks. While it’s a treat to see great masses of pink salmon undulating with the currents, it’s just about impossible to avoid snagging them with every cast. You may hook lots of fish, bu...

Kodiak all-stars end with a victory
Kodiak’s intermediate Little League all-stars finished District I baseball pool play with a 6-3 win over Homer on Saturday in Knik. The team ended pool play with a 1-3 record and did not qualify for the Sunday’s semifinals. “(It’s) nice to end on a win,” Kodiak coach Bryan Ellsworth wrote in a text message. Kodiak lost to Abbott-O-Rabbit, Knik and Dimond-West, three teams that advanced to the semifinal round. Nuna...

HEATING UP: Scott Yost claims stock car main event
Scott Yost had a feeling he would end up in victory lane, so he had his daughter bring a bottle of champaign to the Kodiak Island Raceway. After a 20-lap hobby stock main event, Yost popped the cork while standing on top of his 1978 camaro. On Saturday night, Yost outlasted a field of six to claim his first checkered flag in only his third official race — the first two races were heat races earlier in the program....

Something fishy about fishing pier idea
To the Editor, I find it ironic that Councilman Davidson presented an idea to the City Council on June 23 regarding the building of a pedestrian fishing pier. I would like to point out that citizens of Kodiak have been fishing from the local beaches for centuries. Mission Beach and Mill Bay Beach are close to town and should not provide any barriers to people who want to fish. Until the council made it a violation...
