He not only ran both the Yukon Que...

KODIAK — Who trains the trainers? On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Alaska Marine Safety Education Association hosted a clinic for fishermen and sailors who need to keep their crews up to date. The crews of boats that sail beyond a certain distance from shore, explained instructor Neil Nickerson, need to take monthly drills in order to stay ready in case of an emergency. The problem is that only certified instructors ...

Supreme Court tosses out new Alaska political districts
KODIAK — The Alaska Supreme Court has ruled that the Alaska Redistricting Board must re-do its work drawing new lines for the state’s political boundaries. In its ruling, the court said the board must more closely follow the Alaska Constitution. In doing so, the court referred to a 20-year-old case, Hickel v. Southeast Conference, that laid out redistricting guidelines after a 1990 redistricting plan was challenge...

Snow doesn't stop construction on new Kodiak Fish and Game building
KODIAK — Kodiak’s third-snowiest winter on record has occasionally brought traffic to a halt and slowed movement. On Near Island, where a new regional Alaska Department of Fish and Game headquarters is under construction, things have barely slowed down. “It’s been a heck of a winter,” said Scott Ivany, manager of Alaska operations for PCL Construction, which is constructing the new building. “We’ve pressed through...

Guest opinion: Rep. wants long-term school funding solution
As you may know, I was in Kodiak the weekend of March 8-11 and held a set of public meetings at the high school commons to address funding for education. This spring’s school district budget, combined with the governor’s no-growth budget plan for education, created a perfect storm for our community. I wanted a chance to hear people’s concerns. I also wanted to bring home some of the information that we get in June...
