Alutiiq Word of the Week: Oct. 12
SaRayaq : Shed_ Tuntuq saRayami inimauq. : The reindeer is hanging in the shed. Outbuildings have been a part of Alutiiq communities for thousands of years. In studies of ancient Alutiiq settlements, archaeologists find smokehouses, storage sheds, and a variety of small structures that illustrate how people used the space outside their homes. Historic sources tell us that Alutiiq families also built small dwellin...

We are alaska
On Monday we were scheduled to leave on the morning jet for Anchorage, where we have Officers Councils this week. Officers Councils is our pastoral retreat where all of the officers in The Salvation Army across Alaska gather for some business, some fellowship, some teaching and some much-needed R&R. We were excited to go, and so we waited with everyone else as the Era flight was cancelled and the Alaska Air fligh...

The Beginnings of Life in the Ocean
Life is such a marvelous thing. It is within us, and all around us in its myriad different forms, large as the blue whale in the ocean depth and small as the invisible bacteria on the countertop, your fingertips, and even in the air we breathe. While we have wondered about life’s origin since the days human brains are complex enough to ask such a question, we have not solved the mystery of what created that first ...

High school football picks: Two titles on the line Saturday
Alaska’s high school football season is down to the final two weeks. On Saturday, the small-school and medium-school divisions will crown champions, while the large-school classification concludes next weekend. I nearly tossed a perfect week in the first round of the playoffs by going 7-1. The only game I misfired on was West Anchorage’s win over North Pole. That runs my season total to 60-11, good for a .845 w...

Perspective: Dengue fever is a serious problem in Central America
At the beginning of the Bristol Bay season in Dillingham, I went for a final walk on shore before we put the boat in the water for the summer. It was a warm day with little breeze, and I followed the road as it wound lazily from the harbor to the airport, past intermittent houses and long tracts of tundra. In a copse of trees, a path peeked out shyly and I took it on a whim, wanting to get off the main road. I plu...
