Government shutdown could stall crab season
Kodiak’s waterfront is bedecked with hundreds of “7 by’s” as boats stack their pots and gear up for the big crab fisheries in the Bering Sea. A reopened Tanner crab fishery will produce a three million pound catch; the numbers for Bering Sea snow crab, Alaska’s largest crab fishery, will b...

Prep picks: Final week of season
The final week of the high school football season is upon us. So far, the season hasn’t been much of a challenge. Last week’s 7-1 record raises my season total to 53-6 (.898). The only game I misfired on was Ketchikan’s victory over Thunder Mountain. This week’s schedule features several games that could go either way, and two conference titles are up for grabs. It should be interesting. Week 8: Barrow (3-3) at Va...

Coast Guard fisheries patrols dwindle amid budget cuts
The Coast Guard continues to search for the missing and save the drowning, but according to the service’s own accounting, fisheries patrols are being sacrificed to make that happen despite budget cuts.
