Runners finish season in Calif.
Five Kodiak High School cross country runners finished their cross country seasons Saturday at the Foot Locker West Regionals in sunny Walnut, California. The sun was shining on a recent Sunday afternoon, so I donned a jacket and struck out for a walk along Mission Road. When I reached the edge of the crescent beach, I noticed a busy gathering of trucks, people, buckets, totes and tools. It was low tide and the pickings were good; not for clams and muscles, though, but for kelp. I made my way down to the high tide mark, where Barb Hoedel stood in a circle of five-ga...

FISH FACTOR: Lower halibut catch advised
Despite some encouraging signs that Pacific halibut stocks are stabilizing after being on a downward spiral for nearly two decades, catches could decrease slightly in most regions again next year.
