July Fourth: Thoughts on our birthday

Every one of our citizens of a certain age (let’s just say it: seniors!) grew up with a knowledge of WWII. Each American family participated in the war: family members served, possibly sacrificed; sugar and gas rationing; victory gardens; war bonds. We did not feel the obligation to thank our military veterans for their service, since we all served essentially.

We were a country generous in spirit. Having won the war, we commissioned the Marshall plan to assist rebuilding the ruins of our allies and vanquished enemies. We thanked our veterans by sending them to college or helping them into homes via the G.I. Bill. We may have viewed the world through a rose-colored lens, but---!
