Guest Opinion

The Alaska Board of Fisheries met on July 17 to discuss several emergency petitions. Two of those petitions would have had direct negative impact on Kodiak’s salmon fisheries. First, if the petition to deny an increase in the egg take for a hatchery in Prince William Sound were granted, it could have limited the Kodiak Regional Aquaculture Association’s future development plans. Second, and more immediate, the petition from the Bristol Bay Native Association could have resulted in additional salmon fishing closures in the Kodiak Management Area DURING THIS SEASON.
