Legislators, please heed Fish Board

Posted: Friday, January 20, 2017 9:00 am

I’m proud of Rep. Louise Stutes, R-Kodiak, and I plan to shake her hand when I next see her. Alaskans across the state are taking an interest, because, as the chair of the House Fisheries Committee, Rep. Stutes is committed to sustaining the salmon fisheries that are the essence of our beloved Alaska.

For generations Alaskans like me have been able to work hard catching fish to make a living. Salmon sustain our way of life, our families and our identities. Living in Kodiak, I witness second- and third-generation fishermen raising their families, shopping at our stores, volunteering for local groups, and active in our community in ways that make our town come alive. Commercial fishing sustains Kodiak and other rural coastal communities around the state. Our docks and harbors are mostly paid for by the commercial fishing industry. We have large employers here and a robust economy, thanks to fishing.
