KODIAK — While Kodiak’s sockeye salmon harvest has been slow, fishermen have encountered a surprise appearance in the water: humpies. Of the roughly 150,000 salmon caught as of Wednesday, 91,000 were pink salmon and just 37,000 were reds.

Alaska Department of Fish and Game Kodiak Area Management Biologist James Jackson said that it’s particularly surprising that 71,000 of the harvested humpies were caught during the recent opener in the Eastside District.
