Kodiak prepares for 4th of July celebrations

KODIAK — The Alaska Department of Public Safety issued a news release Tuesday, reminding the residents of a number of communities –– including Kodiak –– that a ban on fireworks will remain in effect through Independence Day due to the hot, dry weather. But locals across The Rock aren’t letting that put a damper on their celebrations and, with temperatures forecast to be in the mid-60s, Kodiakans are preparing for a 4th of July in the sun.

Out in Chiniak, residents will be throwing their 21st annual 4th of July Parade. Dress is patriotic, which means red white and blue, and there will be face-painting and games for kids. Anyone who wishes to come share their American spirit and Chiniak pride is invited to come and take part in the parade –– whether you have a float, a four wheeler, a bike, a horse, a car or are just on foot, all are welcome. The parade route is from Roads End to Silver Beach, where attendees are invited to bring a lawn chair and sit around a bonfire. A pre-parade potluck will be held at Road’s End Lawn at 4:30 p.m. and the parade begins at 6 p.m. Those attending the potluck are encouraged to bring a dish.
