The village of Old Harbor on Kodiak Island kept its ranking in the top 100 best places in the nation for the outdoor sport enthusiast, this year ranking No. 83.
Nestled near Sitkalidak Island are rich resources for fishing, according to Cynthia Lopez, who works in corporate affairs for the Old Harbor Native Corporation.
And while other opportunities for ecotourism like bird watching or sightseeing are also growing, fishing continues to be the main draw for most of the sports-minded tourists, with the quite a bit of growth in the past 10 years, Lopez said.
Old Harbor also can be the launching area for deer hunting, wilderness camping or non-guided Kodiak bear hunts with transportation provided by locals.
There are three lodges in Old Harbor providing fishing charters as well as bed and breakfast services, Lopez said.
As for the quality of life in the village, which also accounts for the high national score, Lopez said that Old Harbor is a unique place with a rich history. It is at once secluded but can offer modern amenities, including Internet and satellite services.
“It’s a beautiful place,” Lopez said. “It’s safe and clean with friendly people who look after one another.”
