Kodiak rallied from one deficit, but couldn’t overcome another over the weekend in Soldotna.

Down by nine points early in Friday’s contest, the Bears battled back to take a 43-35 decision over the Stars in a Northern Lights Conference girls basketball game.

On Saturday, Kodiak trailed by 16 points at halftime and never recovered, losing 64-44 to Soldotna.

The Bears stand at 5-3 in the NLC and 11-6 overall, while Soldotna is 2-4 and 8-11.

“Obviously it would have been nice to win both games,” Kodiak coach Krista Hicks said. “I’m just hoping we can learn some things about ourselves and our team from today’s loss that will make us stronger the rest of the season.”

After Ila Hughes cut Soldotna’s deficit to 20-18 midway through the second, the Stars reeled off the next 14 points to take a commanding 34-18 lead into the locker room.

The Bears never recovered after that as the Stars increased their lead to 48-26 by the end of the third quarter.

Hughes led Kodiak with 10 points, while Stepanie Price and Charmaine Fabricante each chipped in nine points.

Lindsey Wong and Haley Miller each had 17 points for Soldotna, while Haley Ramsell added 10.

Kodiak was able to overcome an early deficit on Friday.

The Stars built an 11-2 lead with three minutes left in the first quarter.

Kodiak battled back and grabbed a 13-12 lead behind a 3-pointer by Hughes, a bucket by Dannika Catt and six straight points from Krystal Fangonilo.

The two teams traded the lead until Kodiak closed out the half on a mini run that gave the Bears a 26-20 lead.

Kodiak never trailed in the second half.

Catt paced the Bears with 12 points, while Ila Hughes had 10 and Fangonilo nine.

Kodiak plays Thursday and Saturday at Thunder Mountain and Friday at Juneau-Douglas.
