Fishers sue seafood association over use of funds for Pebble Mine opposition

Posted: Wednesday, April 17, 2019 10:16 am

Six Bristol Bay fishermen have filed a lawsuit against the Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association, claiming that it is misusing funds. The fishermen allege that BBRSDA’s use of funds to support Pebble Mine opposition advocacy projects does not fall within the parameters of the organization’s remit and is violating state law. Pebble Partnership Limited confirmed that it is funding the fishermen’s litigation against BBRSDA.

The primary mission of the BBRSDA is to increase the value of and promote seafood products from the Bristol Bay region. The association was founded by fishermen with state approval in 2005 and is funded with one percent tax on the harvest.
