AMAZING NATURE: Kodiak students enjoy mud flats and deep sea

It was a busy week. This year during the first week of May the Kodiak Ocean Science Discovery Program went out of town for five days of marine science curriculum. The target was the five students in the Port Lions Middle School as well as 11 students from St. Mary’s School in Kodiak. It was a great match, because students and teachers already knew each other from previous activities.

After plenty of planning, preparation, shopping and packing, I took several totes of the more fragile supplies and boarded a small aircraft headed for the Port Lions air strip. The week started with sunshine and much anticipation, and while I ran through all the planned activities in my head, we waited for the boat that would bring the Kodiak students, the remaining 14 totes of gear, the large carboard box we would turn into a submarine, and my co-worker. On the way, the group stopped to deploy a plankton net and take samples.
