Kodiak’s girls basketball team concluded its weekend swing through the capital city with a split against Juneau-Douglas and Thunder Mountain.

On Friday, Kodiak jumped out to an early lead and fended off Juneau, 50-42.

On Saturday, the Bears played a strong first half, but couldn’t keep it up, falling 55-31 to Thunder Mountain for the second time in three days.

The Bears went 1-2 on their trip to Juneau and head into the final week of the regular season with a 12-8 record.

On Saturday, Kodiak led Thunder Mountain 7-4 after the opening quarter. The Bears went up 12-8 in the second, but after that it was all Falcons.

Thunder Mountain scored the next 25 points for a 33-12 lead midway through the third quarter.

Kodiak ended its lengthy scoring drought on a Stephanie Price free throw. The senior paced the Bears with 10 points, while Charmaine Fabricante and Dannika Catt tossed in six.

“Foul trouble hindered our already short bench,” assistant coach Sandra Gregory said. “We simply ran out of gas, but fought hard to the end with good attitudes and composure. Thunder Mountain is a solid team with a deep bench.”

Kodiak took only eight players to Juneau and played its final two games without junior Kahye Yu, who dislocated her shoulder in a 12-point loss to Thunder Mountain on Thursday.

On Friday, Kodiak led 12-5 after the first and 24-10 at halftime.

The Bears increased the lead to 15 points to begin the fourth.

Juneau outscored Kodiak by seven in the final period and pulled to within 46-40 with a minute left.

Hughes, who finished with 15 points, polished the win with four free throws.

Charmaine Fabricante added a career-high 12 points.

Kodiak plays Friday and Saturday at Wasilla in a pair of NLC games.
