KODIAK — The annual Relay For Life fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society begins at 6 p.m. tonight at Baranof Park, and the public is encouraged to attend.
A wide variety of musical and dance acts are scheduled to perform during the 24-hour event in which participants walk, run or dance laps around the track at the park in response to community pledges and to show solidarity with cancer patients and survivors.
The event's musical aspect is highlighted by an appearance from country and rock musician Ken Peltier, who will perform at 7 p.m. following his participation in the cancer survivors' lap.
A partial schedule of events follows:
6 p.m.: Relay for Life opening ceremony followed by the survivors’ lap.
7 p.m.: Alaska country and rock musician Ken Peltier performs.
Midnight: Luminaria ceremony to honor those fighting or who have died of cancer.
9 a.m.: Zumba Latin workout routine and exercise class.
10 a.m.: “Quarter Mile,” bring quarters to the Baranof Park to make it all the way around the track.
Noon: Pantine Beautiful Length hair donation
1 p.m.: Kodiak Samoan dance troupe performs.
2 p.m.: Kodiak High School dance team performs.
6 p.m.: Closing ceremony
