KODIAK — Today is the last day this summer that fireworks can be legally sold or set off in the Kodiak Island Borough.

Earlier this year, the borough assembly, responding to complaints of fireworks being discharged at night throughout the summer, approved an ordinance restricting summertime fireworks to June 15 through July 15.

While enforcement of the borough ordinance was an open question when the ordinance was approved in May, assembly members noted Thursday that there have been fewer problems around Mill Bay Beach this year.

The next permitted time for fireworks is the day after Christmas until New Year’s Day.

Fireworks are restricted within the city of Kodiak year-round.
