The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly honored Bayside Fire Deputy Chief Doug Mathers (right) for 35 years of service to the borough at its meeting on Oct. 15. Mathers has worn many hats at the station, including serving as interim chief. Chief Howard Rue (left) presented Mathers with the award and credited him with helping turn Bayside Fire Department around in recent times. “We have made a really great turnaround, and I couldn’t have done it without Doug’s leadership and vast knowledge,” Rue said. After accepting the award, Mathers said, “People have come and gone through the years, and they’ve all been really good. I’ve really enjoyed myself.”
