KODIAK — The Kodiak Garden Club invites island residents to pull up their roots this weekend and get moving for a tour of gardens around the city and in Bell’s Flats.

The two-day event includes nine sites in Kodiak proper and four in Bell’s Flats. Maps to the city sites will be available from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday in the Kodiak High School parking lot, and the tour runs from 1 to 4:30 p.m., rain or shine.

Maps to the Bell’s Flats sites will be available from noon to 1 p.m. Sunday at the AC store in Bell’s Flats, and that tour runs from 1 to 4:30 p.m., as well.

“The people just pick up a map and head out,” said Norma Holt, secretary of the garden club. “We ask that people carpool, because some of the places are hard up for parking.”

Kodiak’s combination of poor soil, limited sunshine and high wind makes gardening challenging, said Cheryl Bolyns, who is helping organize the tour.

That’s part of the reason more tours this year feature hoophouses, Holt said.

“In the last year in Kodiak, they spread like wildfire, almost,” she said.

Each stop on this year’s tour offers something different, whether it’s innovative planners, the color of flowers, a special arrangement or a beautiful setting.

“It’s not just flowers and landscaping,” Holt said.

Holt and Bolyns each said this time of year is almost perfect for flowers, given the unexpected sunshine bonus in early summer.

“It’s the time when the people have done the most work in their yard,” Holt said.

Holt said she understands that there’s a lot going on this weekend, but she hopes people will come out to see the work Kodiak gardeners have done.
