New kelp farm proposed for Middle Bay

Posted: Friday, June 7, 2019 9:00 am

The Alaska Department of Natural Resources is considering the issuance of a 10-year aquatic farmsite lease in Middle Bay and is now seeking public comment on the proposal. The request for the roughly 35-acre-lease was from the firm Blue Evolution, which intends to use the site as a kelp farm. The deadline for the public comment period is July 5.

According to a public notice, the DNR’s Southcentral Regional Land Office has made a preliminary decision to offer a 10-year lease to Blue Evolution for a farmsite on state-owned tide and submerged lands for the purpose of the culture and harvest of Sugar Kelp and Ribbon Kelp.
