A 20-year-old Kodiak man faces a felony theft charge for allegedly stealing two kayaks valued at $720 from a Mission Road yard.
Gerardo Rodas faces one count of second-degree theft, a class C felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $50,000 fine. He was arraigned in Kodiak District Court on Friday.
According to court documents, on Aug. 31 a Kodiak man reported two small red kayaks, worth $360 each, had been stolen from his yard on the 1500 block of Mission Road.
The man told police he saw another man had a picture on Facebook that included a similar kayak to his. The paddle in the picture also appeared bent the same way as a paddle with the missing kayak.
On Sept. 4, an officer contacted the pictured man, who said his friend owned the kayaks and they had used them during the summer. After they used them, Rodas allegedly asked the man to store them at his home on the 4000 block of Rezanof Drive.
Police confirmed the two red kayaks matched the description of the missing ones. On Sept. 15, police located Rodas at his home and he allegedly admitted taking the kayaks.
The owner of the kayaks reported that the kayaks were returned Sept. 22 by the person who had been storing them.
