A Coast Guard service member is facing charges of sexual abuse of a minor following an investigation by the Coast Guard Investigative Services, according to court documents.
Jonathan Vargas, 22, is charged with five counts of sexual abuse of a minor and one count of indecent exposure, all felonies.
On Nov. 25, Coast Guard Investigative Services agents were made aware that Vargas was having a sexual relationship with a female minor, the documents state.
The minor reportedly admitted to the relationship in an interview with agents on Dec. 4.
According to the documents, the minor said she had been at a bonfire with Vargas and had engaged in sexual intercourse with him.
Vargas, who had been told mutliple times the girl’s age, reportedly touched the girl’s chest and engaged in multiple sexual acts in an East Rezanof Drive residence.
The agents spoke to Vargas’ coworker who had found out the victim was 15 years old and reportedly told Vargas to stay away from her. The coworker also said that Vargas was aware of her age.
Bail is $5,000 and the next court hearing will be on Dec. 30 at 2:45 p.m.
According to the documents, Vargas is required to stay at least 500 feet away from the victim’s residence and to remain on the Coast Guard base.
