One person died when two cars collided at the intersection of Ole Johnson Avenue and Rezanof Drive on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Kodiak Police Department Lt. Francis De La Fuente, a Chevrolet Tracker carrying three people from one family failed to stop while coming down the hill on Ole Johnson.
A Chevrolet flatbed truck from the city of Kodiak Public Works Department carrying two people struck the Tracker. It was traveling east on Rezanof toward the hospital.
All five people were transported to the hospital. One person from the Tracker was medevaced to Anchorage, where they later died. De La Fuente said that person had been ejected from the vehicle.
The two city employees were later released from the hospital.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
“Witnesses saw that it was traveling at a high speed without yielding or slowing down. But it’s still initial stages,” De La Fuente said.
Officers returned to the scene today to gather more evidence.
De La Fuente said that several volunteers from nearby vehicles stopped and helped out before police, fire and ambulance crews arrived. He said the police department was trying to find out who they were, both to get a statement and to say thank you.
“We want to thank the volunteers that showed up ahead of us that were on scene,” he said.
“We do want to speak to them and thank them. They helped a lot yesterday.”
