Davis Lowery got the best of his former team on Saturday.

Kenai scored the game’s opening 20 points and rolled to a 30-6 Northern Lights Conference football victory in the inaugural “Salmon Bowl” at Kenai High School.

Lowery headed Kodiak’s defense last season and in the offseason was named the head coach of the Kenai Kardinals.

Lowery and second-year Kodiak coach Bill McGurie decided to label the game the “Salmon Bowl” and award a traveling trophy to the winning team.

Kenai (2-0 NLC, 3-2 overall) grabbed the trophy and the pivotal conference victory to stay in the playoff chase.

Kodiak (3-2, 0-2) dropped its second straight conference game and saw its playoff hopes diminish as the Bears sit in fourth place behind Kenai, Soldotna (5-0, 1-0) and Palmer (1-4, 1-0) — the top two qualify for postseason.

Kodiak, which is now 4-12 all-time against Kenai, finishes conference play against Soldotna this Saturday in Kodiak and at Eagle River (2-3, 0-1) in Week 8.

The Bears offense sputtered, netting only 98 yards — 30 on the ground and 68 through the air. Kenai racked up 360 total yards.

Kaleb Finley’s 75-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter accounted for Kodiak’s only points of the game.

The Bears had more punts (sevens) than first downs (four).

Quarterback Andreas Carros was 8 for 18 with 68 yards, while rushing for 17 yards on six carries.

Zach Tuttle ammassed 174 yards of offense — 97 rushing and 77 receiving — and scored two first-quarter touchdowns. He added a 25-yard field goal in the fourth.
