“Throughout my service as an officer in the Marine Corps Reserve, I witnessed the struggles our servicemen and women experience in their search for proper care,” Sullivan said in a statement. “It is our collective obligation — as members of Congress and as American citizens — to better understand the factors that contribute to veteran suicide, bolster preventative measures, and prevent these tragedies from occurring.”

Today’s meeting, to be held in Room 204 of the Butrovich building on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus from 12:30-1:30 p.m., is open to the public but public testimony will not be accepted. 

“In high school, you play basketball, you play chess, you hang out and eat burgers with your friends. But the family had the store, the gas stations, a service station, a fuel oil distributorship. ... So sometimes I would come home just dog tired, but I still wanted to go to the ballgames, to the proms, to the dances,” he said.
