As you’re putting the finishing touches on your Thanksgiving dinner, don’t worry if you’ve forgotten an essential ingredient to your hard-cooked meal.
This year, Kodiakans will have several options for last-minute food shopping runs as area grocery stores keep abbreviated hours on the holiday to accommodate for dinner-related purchases.
CostSavers, Kodiak’s Costco outlet, will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as it was last year. The AC Food For Less store will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and new manager Cindy Dayton said she’s hoping the store will stay busy.
Safeway manager Mike Murray said the large grocery retailer will be open regular hours on the holiday, from 6 a.m. to midnight. The store was open the same hours last year and has remained open on the holiday since the late ’80s.
Murray said there are typical times when the store is busier than others on the holiday.
“The traffic in the morning and the early afternoon is awfully brisk, and it’s all the things — ‘Hey go get some more butter. I need some more rolls. Run and get some celery.’ — It’s not really heaving shopping, but it’s brisk,” he said.
Traffic is expected to remain steady until around dinnertime, as people realize what it is they have forgotten.
“It’s top-off items,” Murray said. “It really peaks in the early afternoon. That last little bit it’s everybody realizing what it is they need.
Murray expects Safeway to be full stocked with the typical Thanksgiving necessities.
Walmart is the only major retailer in Kodiak opening on Thanksgiving for non-food related shopping. The store opens at 7 a.m. Thanksgiving and doesn’t close again until Friday night.
