The Kodiak High School Theater Troupe will remind everyone about the different stages of life in its three-part play “Growing Up … It Ain’t Easy,” opening this weekend.

The curtain goes up at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The Sunday matinee starts at 3 p.m.

The play is directed by Lissa Jensen, who has been leading the high school drama program for 15 years.

“This is one of our smaller, more interesting shows,” Jensen said. “I chose this program because it’s time for a good laugh, and that’s what this play will bring.”

The three one-act plays all provide a different perspective on age and growing up.

“The first act is a gentle, touching piece on Adam and Eve, the second is a total farce about a baby’s point of view, and the final act is a serious drama about teenagers and what they’re facing as they try to grow up,” Jensen said. “All the acts are intertwined with narrators and music.”

Seniors Caleb Fish and Brendan Wehde and junior Kristin Nymeyer play the main characters in the three plays.

“These actors get to play a variety of roles that show their talent,” Jensen said.

Switching from one role to the next so quickly has been challenging for some of the cast.

“For me it’s been a little bit difficult because in the first act I’m a very bubbly person, and in the next one I’m a very different character,” Nymeyer said.

This is also the first performance that Nymeyer and Fish have been in that does not involve special music numbers.

“There is music, but we don’t pay attention to it, and I enjoyed the challenge of not having choreography,” Fish said.

Freshman Caitlin Fogel holds the role that ties all three acts together.

There are between 15 and 20 students working on the production, and they have been preparing for the performance for the last month.

“I hope that everybody has a good time, and that one of our plays makes them think a little bit,” Wehde said.

Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children 10 years old and younger.
