Shirley Jean Pruitt, matriarch of the Kodiak Pruitt clan, passed away peacefully at Providence Hospital in Kodiak, Alaska on Monday, January 7, 2019. Shirley was born on November 15, 1939 in Omaha, Nebraska to Dennis and Esther Mae Knapp. In 1955, Shirley met and married the love of her life, Sidney G. Pruitt, Sr; the man with whom she would share everlasting love and memories with. One year later, Sid and Shirley welcomed their first child, Sidney G. Pruitt, Jr. In the following 10 and a half years, they were blessed with nine more children: Victoria Marie (Bishop) 1957; Russell Elliot 1958; Dale Robert 1960; Jeffrey Scott 1960; Steven Michael 1962; Brian Wade 1963; John Wesley 1964; Julia Lynn (Walker) 1965 and Chad Jeremy 1967.

In the spring of 1973, Shirley and Sid put their faith in God and Sid’s life-long friend, Devoe Friend, and journeyed to Kodiak to set down roots and raise their children. Once settled, Shirley opened an in-home daycare where she devoted her life to caring for children, something she was truly passionate about. She enjoyed listening to (and looking at) Johnny Cash, sharing stories and being surrounded by those she loved; family was everything to Shirley. From summers at Pruitt Camp to holidays and special occasions at her house, her heart and her home were always opened to those in need. Shirley gave her love without condition and in abundance. She spent her life, loving. Loving her husband; loving her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; and loving God. Shirley was a funny, strong-willed, caring, outspoken, stubborn, generous, family-oriented woman who will be greatly missed.
