Oluf “Ole” Omlid was born on February 13, 1938, to Marie and Sven Omlid in Thief River Falls, MN. Growing up on a small farm shaped who he was as a person and taught him a lot about hard work and the love and closeness of family.

For his early education, Oluf and his brother Sid rode two miles on horseback to a one-room country schoolhouse. The death of his father when Oluf was 15 drastically changed his life and forced him to grow up quickly as he and the family assumed the responsibilities of running the farm while also attending high school. He graduated from Goodridge High School, where he also participated in various athletics.
