Unborn sharks more amazing than Easter Bunny

KODIAK — It was Easter Sunday in Kodiak and we had snow on the ground. Actually, that is not so unusual; I remember several Easter when my now-grown son was little, where I hid eggs in the snow. This does not change the fact that the winter was extremely warm for our latitude and the Bering Sea was so warm that the ice did not form like it used to and the cold barrier into the Chukchi Sea disappeared. A little snow in April does not negate the science of climate change. However, that is not what I wanted to write about today. I just visited with a friend and had a conversation with her four-year old granddaughter about the Easter Bunny and where it gets the eggs from. This is rather confusing, because if the Easter bunny lays the eggs, then why do they hatch into chicks and not little bunnies?

These mysteries of our cultural traditions often clash with well-known facts. As bunnies are mammals, they do not lay eggs, and if you have eggs, they hatch into birds, not mammals. This is a general truth that we all know and teach our kids. Okay, if you have one of those smart kids that reads a lot, he or she is going to pipe up that there is the platypus and it is a mammal that lays eggs. My response would be, that perhaps we should replace the bunny with the Easter Platypus. Platypus are the living proof that every rule has an exception, but who has ever seen a real-life platypus?
