May is Older Americans Month throughout the country, and this year’s theme is, “Unleash the Power of Age.” And that is what we at the Senior Citizens of Kodiak Inc. try to do each day.

There are always activities at the center in which to participate. This Friday, we are having a special luncheon in celebration of Mothers’ Day. Come and enjoy a delicious lunch with your friends where the mothers get served.

May 15 is a special luncheon at Coast Guard Base Kodiak hosted by the Chief Petty Officers Association (CPOA). This great group of volunteers has usually put on a holiday luncheon for Kodiak seniors but with their change in membership and leadership, they are coming through with a spring luncheon. A bus will be provided and sign in is needed for that. Just call the senior center and sign up to get a ride. The bus will be leaving the center at 11 a.m., so be sure to get to the center in time to get on the bus. We thank the CPOA for hosting this spring event.

Major training will be happening at the center near the end of the month. May 21 and 22 will be a Mental Health First Aid course which is similar to First Aid and CPR. The two-day class will teach you how to help those experiencing mental health problems until a professional is available. There is no cost for this training which is conducted and funded by the Trust Training Cooperative. You must attend both days of the class to get certified.

On May 23, Dr. Rubin, a national speaker, will be at the center to address seniors and mental illness. He will address wellness in seniors, caregiving with and without drugs and other aspects of mental illness in older adults. He will also performing his original piece, “Dementia: The Musical” which will wake up the senses right after lunch, and the session will end at 5 p.m.

On May 24, Karen Godnik from Alaska Legal Services will be available for legal information in the morning and the afternoon is set aside for a wills clinic.

Each day of training starts at 8:30 a.m. with a complimentary breakfast and sessions begin at 9 a.m. Lunch is on your own. There is no cost for the workshops unless continuing education credits are needed; then the cost is $45 for 12 CEUs. All session are in the multi-purpose room at the center.

Call to sign up for your workshop to Marita Kaplan at 486-2203.
