It is pretty quiet at the senior center this month but some events will happen. We won’t have yoga on Monday or Thursday or Tai Chi, but you can always go for a hike or walk at nearby trails. That is one of the best things about living in Kodiak — the scenic trails that are easy to walk.   

KODIAK — It is Independence Day tomorrow, and the senior center will be celebrating with the Annual Stan and Nita Nelson BBQ.  Each year on this holiday, we celebrate the Nelsons with a holiday BBQ to honor them for donating part of their estate to the center’s endowment fund.

Kodiak has many talented senior artists in our community and the Kodiak Senior Center annually has an art show to display their talents. This year during May we have 10 artists showing 26 pieces of fine art from watercolors, baskets, and Chinese brush painting to a quilt, which are all fabulous.

Kodiak Senior Center will host its annual Valentine’s Day Party at noon Friday, Feb. 12, at the center. The event honors all Kodiak seniors 80 and older. This year we have 197 people 80 and older on Kodiak Island and that number, I am happy to say, grows each year.

Things are happening at the Kodiak Senior Center with computer classes having started up, exercise each day, Aging Mastery Program classes continuing and special events as well as the regular lunch program.

Each September the National Council on Aging declares Senior Center Month and the Kodiak Senior Center always participates. This year’s theme is: “LIFE- Learning, Independence, Friends and Energy.” And you can find all that at the Kodiak Senior Center every month.

Senior Citizens of Kodiak Inc. was one of eight centers in the western United States selected by National Council on Aging to participate in the Aging Mastery Program.
