Blue poppies spark poppy blues, envy in Lower 48

KODIAK - A few years ago, I hosted a photography workshop for a group of camera buffs from Poland, California, British Columbia, and Wisconsin. After the PowerPoint presentation, we spilled out to the garden. It didn’t take long for the group to notice the blue poppies blooming in the corner of the yard. Camera shutters started clicking away.

Do you realize how fortunate we are to be able to grow these flowers, and with relative ease? Many gardeners would give their left green thumb to “have the blues” in their yard. Lucky us. Blue poppies are more at home where it’s cool, not hot; that even goes for sister states like Washington and Oregon where poppy envy is rampant.
