But who will save us and our state?

KODIAK — As I am writing this column, the outcome of the manufactured budget crisis—and its impacts on our quality of life, the state’s core services, and our jobs, including mine—are still up in the air. Perhaps by the time this is published, we’ll have some answers, but the up-down vote on the slate of vetoes likely failed. In the meantime, though, Alaskans, who overwhelmingly support overriding the vetoes and overwhelmingly disapprove of the governor’s performance so far, have been out in droves with the call to “save our state.”

In the 13th century, when the word save joined the English language, it meant, as it does today, to bring to safety. But it certainly entertained a more specific heroic definition—to prevent the death of something or someone—which was applied in a theological sense, too: to deliver from sin.
