Ballard

Nicholas Murray Ballard passed away peacefully at Providence Hospital Anchorage on September 12, 2017.

He was born in North Bend, Oregon on December 28, 1936, to Jess and Calla Ballard. The family moved to Petersburg, Alaska in 1942.

In his junior year of high school he moved to Seattle and attended Seattle Preparatory School.

Upon graduation, he studied at Seattle University and then entered the Jesuit Novitiate in Sheridan, Oregon. He completed further studies at Mount St. Michaels and Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington.

As a “Mister” with the Je suits, he taught math and physics at Copper Valley school in Interior Alaska, claiming the he learned as much from his students there as he taught them.

In the 60s, he worked with the Model Cities program in Seattle, then spent time as a carpenter and draftsman before returning to Alaska.

He spent time in Kodiak designing buildings and working as a carpenter.

An avid fly fisherman, he had fished throughout the Northwest as well as Alaska.

Nick loved spending hours with his close friends talking about philosophy, theology, and family. Being an artist at heart, he loved spending time with his musically and artistically talented friends.

He enjoyed family dinners with his sister Judi, brother in law Ron, his nieces, nephews and their children. Many of these gatherings were punctuated with lively discussions concerning philosophy, theology, politics and current events. His words of wisdom and his contagious smile will be missed.

Nick spent most of his time in later years read- ing his many periodicals and researching philo- sophy and theology. He was keenly interested in sustainable practices and continued to design and plan his garden.

Nick leaves his sister and brother-in-law; Judi and Ron Acarregui; Kelly and Eric Bennett, and their children, Patrick, Olivia and Samuel of Kodiak; Brenda Fitzgerald and Nancy of Providence Forge, Virginia; Bill and Frenanda Fitzgerald of Campo Grande, Brazil, their children, William, Alexander and Anne Rose, Nicholas and Shannon Fitzgerald; and children, Sterling, Rebecca, Hayden and Lina.
