Kelly N. Simeonoff
Anchorage resident Kelly N. Simeonoff Jr. 73, passed away on Sept. 8, 2012 after a lengthy fight with cancer at St. Elias Specialty Hospital in Anchorage.
A celebration of Kelly’s life and memorial potluck will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012 at Anchorage Funeral Home, 1800 Dare Ave. in Anchorage.
Kelly was born in Cordova on March 29, 1939 to Kelly Simeonoff Sr. and Natalie. He was raised in Kodiak on Woody Island where his family lived during his younger years. Kelly graduated from Kodiak High School and began his military career in the Alaska National Guard.
He then joined the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the aircraft carrier Ranger during the Cold War, afterward receiving an honorable discharge. Kelly returned to Kodiak and was active in community affairs. He was a popular actor in the outdoor theatre production “The Cry of the Wild Ram,” and played the role of “Galak,” in the authentic Russian Cossack Dance. He was well known for his love of dance.
Kelly was awarded a scholarship to Yale University where he studied and worked with minority communities in Boston and Miami. He met his wife Janice, the love of his life, in Anchorage and they married on New Year’s Day.
Kelly had worked at Rural Cap in Anchorage and for the Alaska Area Native Health Service from which he retired. He then became the President of the Kodiak Area Native Association and the family moved to Kodiak. He also worked for the Aleutian Pribilof Island Association as the Health Director before he became seriously ill.
Kelly was preceded in death by his parents, Kelly & Natalie; wife, Janice Simeonoff; and brothers, Peter E. & Frederick M. Simeonoff.
He is survived by his sons, Edwin & Peter E. Simeonoff both of Anchorage; granddaughter, Sophie Simeonoff of Anchorage, AK; brother, Richard E. Simeonoff of AZ; sisters and brothers in-law, Ellen M. & Frank T. Paqano of Anchorage, AK, Judith M. & Luis Salgado of Anchorage, AK; sister, Christina Hoen of Kodiak, AK; 21 nieces and nephews; and numerous family members.
