The Kodiak girls basketball team suffered its first loss of the season with a 59-27 defeat to West Valley Thursday at the West Valley Ice Jam in Fairbanks. 

The Wolfpack raced out to a 21-7 first quarter advantage and never looked back in pushing their record to 4-1. 

Kodiak entered the contest with a perfect 3-0 mark, but couldn’t find its footing against West Valley. 

Junior Leslie Spear entered the game averaging a team-best 23 points per game was held to nine points. 

“They are pretty darn good,” Kodiak coach Sandra Gregory wrote in a text message. “They could have mercy-ruled us by halftime if they wanted. So that because our team goal to not be mercy-ruled out.” 

Kodiak outscored West Valley 18-17 in the second half. 

Sheridan Blasey dropped a game-high 14 points for the Wolfpack, while teammate Rachel Cockman added 11 points. 

Kodiak plays North Pole at 4:30 p.m. today. The Patriots fell to Palmer in Thursday’s opening round. Wasilla junior varsity plays Monroe in the other consolation game. 

West Valley plays Palmer and Thunder Mountain battles Bartlett in today’s semifinals.
