Amaya Rocheleau

Amaya Rocheleau

Kodiak youth Amaya Rocheleau was nearly unbeatable at the 2019 Alaska Swimming Summer Long Course Championships.

The 12-year-old won five of her seven races during the three-day meet that concluded July 28 at Bartlett High School in Anchorage.

Rocheleau won the 50-meter backstroke (32.83 seconds), the 200 backstroke (2:43.41), the 50 freestyle (29.53), the 100 freestyle (1:07.84) and the 100 backstroke (1:14.56).

She added a second in the 50 butterfly (33.11) and a third in the 200 individual medley (2:57.28).

Ian Rocheleau, Amaya’s older brother, won the boys 15-and-over 200 backstroke (2:21.37) while also netting a second in the 100 backstroke (1:04.03) and a third in the 200 IM (2:23.40).

Alison Narog’s top finish was a third in the 800 freestyle (11:22.07). The 14-year-old also added fifths in the 100 backstroke (1:17.19) and 400 freestyle (5:20.14), and sixths in the 100 freestyle (1:05.63) and 200 freestyle (2:27.23).

Former Kodiak resident Alicia Sarnowski, now swimming for the Seacoast Swimming Association, also attended the meet. The 15-year-old was the runner-up in the 200 backstroke (2:37.78) and the 100 backstroke (1:12.26).

The Alaska summer championships was just a tune-up for Amaya Rocheleau and Narog as the two will be competing at the Western Zone Age Group Championships that begin Wednesday in Gresham, Oregon.

Amaya Rocheleau will be making her third appearance at western zones. Her best finish last year was 24th in the 50 freestyle.

The meet features the top 14-and-under swimmers in the western region. Kodiak was represented by five swimmers at the meet last year.
