• The Natalia Shelikof Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution sponsor a “Good Citizen” essay-writing contest each year for three Kodiak High School seniors. McKenzie E. Barnett, selected by three non-DAR judges, was the winner of the Kodiak contest. McKenzie’s essay was submitted by the local chapter to the chairman of the state contest. The State Conference will be held in Anchorage, April 19 and 20.

• Sixth-grader LIzzy Painter won the St. Mary’s Catholic School science fair, held March 5-7. She will compete in the state science fair, March 23-24 in Anchorage. Grade level winners: eighth grade: first place, Rosemary Eufemio; second place, Michael Spirou; third place, Annika Jensen — seventh grade: first place, Michael Medina; second place, Sandra Dorado; third place, London Kiplinger — sixth grade: first place, Lizzy Painter; second place, Declan Crye; third place, Dierich Wiest — fifth grade: first place Edgee Ocampo; second place Keaton Dolph; third place Jacob Dunolp — fourth grade: first place, Ku'ulei Koko — third grade: first place, Stephan Barnes.

• Jaelyn Larson won the St Mary's National Geographic Bee. She will represent St Mary's at the State National Geographic Bee on April 5 at the Egan Center in Anchorage. One winner from the state will advance to the national competition in Washington, D.C. May 20-22.
