Legislators in schools

The Kodiak Borough Education Association, in collaboration with the Kodiak Island Borough School District, hosts the Legislators in Schools event Friday. Sen. Gary Stevens and Rep. Alan Austerman will be visiting Kodiak schools for the day. They will visit classrooms and talk with students, teachers and parents. Kodiak teachers are looking forward to this opportunity to showcase Kodiak’s students and teachers and discuss pertinent state issues regarding education.

Art walk tonight

The Kodiak Arts Council’s First Friday walk is from 5-7 p.m. tonight. The Baranov Museum is featuring Arlene Skinner’s basketry; Dead Humpy Gallery, Alf Pryor prints; Harborside Fly-By, art by Beverly Cole, Marcine Mazurek and Liz Mitchell; Northern Exposure, Marion Owen’s 2014 calendar; The Frame Shop, Michelle Cornejo’s photos; the Alutiiq Museum, and mixed media by Alutiiq artist Jacqueline Madsen. Galley Tables, a new event highlighting one theme through seven 7-minute stories by seven different people will be held from 7-8 p.m. in the Gerald C. Wilson Auditorium drama pod.

Growing workshop

The Kodiak Soil and Water Conservation District hosts an agricultural workshop at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Kodiak Electric Association auditorium in the KEA building on Marine Way. Growers and gardeners are invited to discuss and prioritize ideas for projects to benefit local agriculture. Lunch will be provided.

Knot fun

The Coast Guard Auxiliary Kodiak flotilla will host a holiday craft session about fancy knotting at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Baranov Museum.

Learn some traditional nautical knots for making decorative lanyards, bracelets, pet collars, hot pads and mats. There will be a charge for materials unless the participant brings their own (a full-sized door mat takes about 70 feet of rope).

Running zombies

The 3rd Annual Zombie Run, sponsored by the Kodiak College Student Government Association, is Saturday. Registration begins at 8 a.m., race starts at 9 a.m. It's a 5K race, and a fundraiser of some sort. Murder lecture

Baranov Museum curator Anjuli Grantham presents “Murder in the Magazin,” the story of an 1886 murder in the Baranov Museum. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. Saturday in the museum gallery.
